Ms Donnelly trained at South Manchester School of Nursing and qualified 1990. She then worked at Guys Hospital in General Surgery and then took a Sister's post in the Gynaecology unit at St Thomas' Hospital.  Ms Donnelly then spent a year at Wythenshawe Hospital as a Sister in Colorectal Surgery before developing the first Gynaecology Macmillan CNS role in Manchester at Saint Mary's Hospital.

Ten years later in 2006 she changed direction and developed the role of the ANP in Gynaecology and Gynaecological Oncology. She was a founder committee member of the NFGON and the RCN Women's Health forum. 

She is currently a member of the BSGE and has had a chapter published in 'Womens Cancers'.
