Key Personnel

Clinical Director - Dr Clare Tower

Dr Tower

Dr Clare Tower provides clinical leadership for the Maternity Unit and ensures effective management and support for medical staff.

She leads a team of consultant obstetricians who each have different roles and responsibilities including clinical effectiveness, risk management, education and training.  She works in partnership with the Directorate Manager and senior midwives to provide accountability for the quality and performance of the directorate.  Since becoming Clinical Director, the number of women delivering in the Maternity Unit has increased from around 6000 to 9000, and so there have had to be similar increases in staff and resources. In September 2014 Saint Mary's Hospital became the first hospital in the UK to have consultant presence on the delivery unit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Director of Nursing and Midwifery - Kathy Murphy

As Director of Nursing and Midwifery at Saint Mary's Hospital, Kathy is involved in the assessment of quality standards of care across the Division and providing assurance to the Chief Nurse of the quality of care provided to women and families who access care within the Organisation.

She acts as the professional lead for complaints and is also involved in governance, particularly in relation to investigation of high level incidents.  Establishing and embedding learning from both of these is key to the role.

Deputy Heads of Midwifery - Mary Symington & Julie Hempstock

Mary Symington Julie Hempstock

As Deputy Heads of Midwifery at Saint Mary's Hospital, Mary and Julie's role is to support the Head of Midwifery to ensure there is an efficient and effective midwifery workforce who are equipped to carry out their role safely and confidently. They are particularly interested in patient flows and ensuring women are cared for in the right place by the staff with right skills. Ultimately their goal is that women leave Saint Mary's Hospital having had a great maternity experience, whether or not they were high or low risk, and that they go on to tell their friends and family about us.

Directorate Manager - Eleanor Stanley

The Directorate Manager for Obstetrics works in conjunction with the Clinical Director and Lead Midwives to ensure that the Unit meets all necessary activity and performance requirements.

Eleanor manages all non clinical staff and is responsible for the operational efficiency of the Unit and effective use of all resources.

Lead Midwives

The Lead Midwives have responsibility for the overall day to day management of the maternity unit and the wellbeing of the mothers and babies in our care, as well as the midwifery staff.

They provide professional and clinical leadership and work together with the team above to support the delivery of excellent care to all patients who choose to attend Saint Mary's Hospital.
